Eppure si Muove − Marketisation and Privatisation
Trends in the EHEA
Europeans tend to regard higher education as a bastion of public service. However, in recent times, European governments have been more willing to introduce market elements in the regulation of higher education, notably due to the consequences of its massive expansion and its risings costs. In this text we reflect upon the growing role of privatisation and marketisation in the EHEA and the way this has been changing the sector historically dominated by public regulation through funding,
legislation and provision. We will give particular attention to developments regarding the public-private mix of higher education supply, the diversification of funding sources and the management of academic resources.
