Effects of Globalization on the Internationalization of Higher Education: A Brief Literature Review
This is a brief literature review concerning the effects of globalization on higher education institutions (HEIs) and the internationalization of their systems. HEIs strive to find their place and their students’ places in a globally competitive market, which is possible through English-medium instruction (EMI). Throughout the literature, five themes are noted: (a) HEIs need to play catch-up with HEIs in English-dominant countries, (b) the urgency of increasing studentenrollment, (c) equitability via teacher training and student support, (d) library and online support systems, and (e) the fear of cultural and language loss in countries where EMI programs are established.
