Building a Culture of Internationalisation in Higher Education: Case study of an Irish University
There are no right or wrong answers, but one element which undoubtedly influences the success of any institution’s internationalisation journey is its organisational culture and more specifically its internationalisation culture. As universities become more deliberate in their approach to internationalisation, tools to support changing culture towards internationalisation are needed. This paper describes a case study from the University of Galway in the Republic of Ireland where a project was initiated which explicitly aimed to engender an institutional culture of understanding, engaging in and valuing internationalisation. The case study looks at how the University interpreted internationalisation, describes some of the steps taken within the project, discusses indicators of success, and reflects on what was learnt from the process.
