Global Engagement of European Universities

Given the recent challenges in Europe such as the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the resulting effects on European society and economy, the need to recognize and address global challenges sometimes appears to recede in the background when looking at the strategic development of European universities. In addition, policy changes by European governments, resulting for example in budget cuts for international programs or cooperation and mobility restrictions have put new pressures on keeping global interactions and exchanges afloat. The purpose of this article is to elucidate why global engagement is even more important in these challenging times, by looking at examples and strategic decisions of two universities with an international profile. .
