The internationalisation of higher education and research: purposes and drivers

This article discusses the rationales, or drivers, for the internationalisation of higher education and research. It examines these drivers at four levels – European, national, institutional and individual, in the context of recent shifts in the contemporary paradigm and the emergence of a future paradigm closely linked to globalisation and the knowledge society.
