Leveraging Co-curricular Learning Outcomes to Enhance International Student Services
Examples from a Public Research University in the USA
In the United States, professional advisors play a critical role in supporting the ability of colleges and universities to provide adequate support services to international students. However, the scope and functions of these professional advisors have shifted dramatically over the decades from student development to immigration compliance due to an expanding regulatory environment (Boyd, 2008; Institute of International Education, 2023; Rosser, Hermsen, Mamiseishvili, & Wood, 2007). This article provides a history of the international student advising profession within the United States and presents key strategies for increasing the effectiveness of these professionals based on a case study.
