This article examines the current financial context in European higher education, namely the changing perceptions about the reliance of higher education institutions on public funding and the increased attention to revenue diversification. The article starts by identifying the main forces that have been stimulating a growing awareness about financial diversification. Then, it presents an overview of current patterns of revenue diversification and outlines the main risks and opportunities presented by this increasing institutional commitment to financial diversification. The analysis will also take into consideration the increasing international ramifications of the emphasis on financial diversification.
