Benefits and challenges of a COIL class for student participants
This research aims to identify the benefits and challenges that students encounter during their studies in a Collaborative Online International Learning class. The study conducted interviews with COIL teachers from the SUNY network of universities, who had classes with their partners from other countries, such as Albania, Lebanon, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Greece, Turkey, Nigeria, or Japan. The results show that this type of teaching can be useful, especially for students who do not otherwise have the opportunity to gain international learning experiences and develop technical skills for their future global careers. Despite some challenges, the feedback was mostly positive regarding student experience, as well as personal and academic development.
