Applying Organizational Lenses to Understand the Potential for International Research Experiences for Students to Catalyze Broader Internationalization
The U.S. National Science Foundation supports International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) programs to facilitate international research collaborations and strengthen U.S. leadership in research. This study explored how the structure of IRES programs relates to their outcomes for the academics and the university where the program is housed. We combined theoretical analysis using three perspectives from organizational theory with a case study analysis of nine IRES programs. Our theoretical analysis suggested that different structures could influence the connections between an IRES program and the larger university, thereby impacting its potential to contribute to campus internationalization.
