Strategic Internationalisation
The case of Aurora
Aurora is an interesting case of recent developments in international university collaboration. As a group of like-minded universities, it formed a high trust platform aiming to strengthen member universities’ matching of academic excellence with societal relevance. Presidents’ priorities focused the international collaboration on core domestic objectives. With the Bibliometrics of Relevance project and the Aurora Competence Framework, it aims to bridge the gap between strategic prose and academic practice. The European Universities initiative (which was Initiated by French president Macron in 2017 and formally launched by the European Commission in 2018 as part of the ERASMUS+ programme). caused both an upheaval and an acceleration of Aurora, with new challenges to be resolved. This will require the Aurora universities to find a balance between Command, Demand and Drive at the local, national, continental and global level.
