Mobility of Knowledge as the Keystone of Internationalization
Reflections from the Middle East and North Africa and beyond
In the wake of the Covid-19 crisis, a revised understanding
of the internationalization of higher education appears to
emerge , which perceives the mobility of knowledge as its
keystone. New so and 21st-century skills are increasing-
ly required for today’s changing labor markets, and inter-
nationalization is a sure route for developing those skills.
By considering the Middle East and North Africa as a case
study, and reviewing higher education lessons learned
from the Covid-19 pandemic, we suggest this is an oppor-
tune moment for rethinking the role of mobility of knowl-
edge within internationalization. This article suggests that
access to a diversity of knowledge is the most fundamen-
tal part of internationalization, as it contributes to building
skills and allows for confrontation with otherness. This is
made possible by the mobility of knowledge.
