What the Irish Survey of Student Engagement tells us about the experience of international students in ireland

This paper investigates the experiences of internationally
domiciled students (IDS) in higher education in Ireland by
examining StudentSurvey.ie results for 2016 and 2020. The
results demonstrate consistently greater engagement
among IDS than Irish domiciled students across time and
across the elements of student engagement. This paper
concludes that institutions in Ireland are delivering an ed-
ucational experience to IDS of comparable quality to that
experienced by Irish domiciled students. The similarities
and differences in the experiences of Irish domiciled and
internationally domiciled students offers rich substance
for building higher education institutions which are inno-
vative, flexible, and highly globally interconnected.
