Sustainability of International Joint Universities
The Case of a German Model University in Vietnam
This article explores the role of international joint universities (IJUs), especially in relation to evolving internationalization policies and practices in Vietnam. It focuses on the Vietnamese-German University (VGU) as a case study and points out challenges and opportunities of the VGU. The challenges are the increasing competition with indigenous universities, the successful transfer of governance to the Vietnamese side, and effective campus presence. The article concludes that, despite these challenges, IJUs could serve as an emerging model against the dominant international branch campus (IBC) model within transnational higher education.
