Building International Partnerships to Promote Education for Refugees
Education for Humanity Initiative
The aim of this paper is to articulate the experience of a large, public American university as it designed, developed, and implemented higher education programmes for refugees around the world. The article explores the rationale for the university’s entry into this sector, the implicit preparations required to do so responsibly, the inherent barriers to successful implementation, and, critically, the approach to building partnerships with philosophically compatible organisations. The outcome is a guide for other institutions to consider in the development of strategies for engaging in refugee education as well as a call for advocacy in extending educational opportunities to refugees and host community members worldwide.
